solution: dont buy a new car.[Edited on September 29, 2005 at 1:13 PM. Reason : that is pretty f'ed up, tho.]

I was afraid this would come sooner or later. Not buying a new car eventually won't be an excuse, they'll probably force people to retrofit, and make the fines so severe for removal that people won't want to take the chance. However, I'd say this is probably at least 10 years off in the UK, and it will probably face much more legal hurdles here. If it ever gets off the ground.
9/29/2005 1:15:25 PM
you know if the price is right, someone will remove it or hax0r it
9/29/2005 1:22:15 PM
the sooner someone does this, the sooner someone figures out how to trick it
9/29/2005 1:23:37 PM
9/29/2005 1:27:04 PM
this will take 25 years to bring into action

I'd love to see the results of a lawsuit where the black box preventing speeding actually cost someone their life.
9/29/2005 1:40:09 PM
^ thats what I was thinkingI hate stuff like this and I would sue the hell out of anyone I could if that happend.
9/29/2005 1:44:57 PM
What they really need to design is a black box that can detect when you're driving like a complete ass-clown and ticket you then.

Here's the problem with thisThis would require a MASSIVE infrastructure telling what speed what area is and keeping up to date when limits are changed. It also doesn't take into accountPassing legallyChanges in speed limits that are suddenetcThe main deal was the changing speed limits that would be done by people who might forget to submit the information to the system or enter it incorrectly etc etc. It's why it never got off the ground in Nevada. It costs too much and there is too much room for error on the administrative side. Black boxes ARE cool and i think a great idea to record the speeds people have been moving for say the past week. Especially after a wreck. I was in a wreck where someone caved in the side of my volvo and though it was my fault (I was 17), he claimed he was moving the speed limit in a parking lot. If the cop had not had common sense (there's a lot of those), he would have just written me up. Instead he wrote the guy a wreckless and dangerous ticket and I got off scott free. Most people might not be this lucky.OH... you were moving 45 in 15... and this guy was backing out of a parking spot... no wonder he didn't see you. Here's a $500 fine.

well technically you should only pass if you dont exceed the posted speed limitbut who does that?
9/29/2005 1:54:25 PM
9/29/2005 1:55:00 PM
9/29/2005 1:55:58 PM
rental cars would greatly benefit from this
9/29/2005 1:59:43 PM
^ I am pretty sure they tried that before but there was a legal challange and they backed off.Edit: Yep, here is the legal info:http://writ.news.findlaw.com/ramasastry/20050823.html[Edited on September 29, 2005 at 2:05 PM. Reason : legal]

Invasion of privacy.
9/29/2005 2:06:17 PM
What about places with: + rush hourI'm glad the triangle doesn't have a minimum speed limits anywhere (not that I know of)... crap... getting a ticket for breaking the minimum speed limit would suck![Edited on September 29, 2005 at 2:10 PM. Reason : logic...]
9/29/2005 2:08:25 PM
That will never happen in the US. And if it does, I won't buy a new car.
9/29/2005 2:13:12 PM
all roads (highways at least) have an implied minimum speed limit, even if it is not posted.
9/29/2005 2:15:19 PM
9/29/2005 2:22:58 PM
bah, just put on some oversize tires.
9/29/2005 2:47:11 PM
how does that help? speed is measured using GPS.
9/29/2005 3:22:30 PM
i like the polling system... was actually thinking of it as i read the first few posts
9/29/2005 3:27:00 PM
just break out the automated cars already...if we're gonna take away free will as far as speeding
9/29/2005 3:41:05 PM
god damn thats some intrusive shit
9/29/2005 4:07:01 PM
9/29/2005 4:13:25 PM
9/29/2005 4:30:59 PM
wow that sucks. good thing there's a way to get around pretty much everything
9/29/2005 5:16:02 PM
another question is, should the retrofitting ocme into play, how would they deal with people's track/autocross cars? that would suck ass to get a ticket for whoopin someones ass at a legal, sanctioned track event in your weekend warrior mobile...
9/29/2005 7:05:00 PM
leave it to the UK to come up with such faggotry as this
9/30/2005 12:24:10 AM
privacy folks would go crazy over this, just like the black boxes they tried putting in the corvettes a few years back
9/30/2005 12:41:38 AM
9/30/2005 8:26:45 AM
^ And that goes back to what I was saying about getting killed because you weren't able to speed.
9/30/2005 9:10:30 AM
Exactly. And you ARE allowed to exceed the speed limit when passing someone when crossing over a dotted yellow line. You are not on the highway. I even got to ask a cop that yesterday after reading the posts. He was Raleigh RPD buying stuff from us.

9/30/2005 9:54:15 AM
yeah ok on a longass stretch of state higway you are going to be satisfied with doing 10 under and dodging pieces of trees flying at your car?
9/30/2005 12:19:36 PM
slow down and wait until you can pass without excessively exceeding the speed limit, i meant.
