My girlfriend's pc doesn't have usb2.0, but when you plug in the iPod it just says "High speed device plugged into non-high speed port" or something. It still lets me upload songs, it's just not as fast as it is at work. Did you try just plugging it in? Is she using XP?

I always thought that they worked with regular USB 1.1 ports. But expect it to be wickedly slow. And if you're using a hard drive based iPod, expect the battery to die halfway through the transfer.
