if we started using russian equipment it wouldn't really matter when it was designed

No big deal IMO. Sounds to me like they are doing this so they can keep us in orbit while they design something to replace the current shuttle fleet. Probably cheaper and easier than continuing to service an outdated shuttle that causes horrible press everytime something goes wrong with it.

Its not that impressive when you consider the fact that they gave us a warehouse full of soyuz capsules in exchange for 4 bottles of Finlandia and a few pairs of Levi's.

Let's face it, when it came to putting people and equipment up in space, we may have done it fancier, but the Soviets knew how to do it reliably.

Its true that the shuttle system failed its original mission and its continued existence may have attributed to NASA lacking innovation for the better part of the 1990's.

This is necessary, however, to continue to use our Space Station. Hopefully with China entering the race the federal government will be spurred into more action.

I fully expect China's space program to influence NASA's mission and budget in the near future.

Yeah, because we've never reaped any benefits from it.

^^ Fossil fuels have sure paid off, however.
For example, right now, the most expensive well under development in the United States is going to cost less than $25 a barrel to extract. The owners are currently getting over $50 a barrel. Good heavens! A profit/cost ratio of 50%!! That is unheard of in any industry.

You bet your ars we're going to invest money in fossil Fuels!!

The Russians are the only ones to be drinking in vodka in space. No seriously, for long trips to the space station they get to bring alittle vodka.
