Setting up a small-scale personal server on-campus last night, I ran into a problem. Install went fine, initial setup went fine. Suddenly all connections (ssh, imap, telnet, etc.) started being refused, though I can ping the host. The machine is still running fine, if I sit down at it I can ssh out.I'm thinking it has to do with the ResNet firewall. What're the policies on student computers running services?

maybe you should've read them when you signed on the line which is dotted agreeing to abide by them

http://www2.ncsu.edu/prr/informationtechnology/REG08.00.2.phpNothing there about running a personal server, try your flame again, maybe the next one will catch.

my friend had a personal server set up on campus both years he lived on campus, last year and the year before. so its definitely able to be done
9/22/2005 12:05:51 PM
^^^yeah talking all big and ish doesnt help the fact that you still have a fag name and cant setup a simple server.try apache bitch

not sure if they did this is all the dorms, but periodically in wolf village we haveto reauthenticate on thier newly implemented nomad-like system for resnet. could be that you need to reauthenticate on that from the server. I noticed similair behavior the other day for mine even though i could ping it.

I had to autheticate before I could do my Debian netinstall. Quite a feat since I hadn't installed an OS yet: Knoppix LiveCD FTW.Still doesn't change the fact there's no point in setting up a server if the ports I'll be using are locked down. Whee...
9/22/2005 12:30:42 PM
thing is, from my personal experience, the ports aren't blocked...i use mine all the time
9/22/2005 12:56:23 PM
You are allowed to run whatever you want as long as it's legal and doesn't use excessive bandwidth, and doesn't violate university policy. The only ports that are blocked are a couple of the old known file sharing ports and a couple of the major Windows exploit ports. There is no "ResNet firewall."-Carrie

^^ HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW? YOU'RE JUST A TDUB NOOB WITH 200 POSTS. jk
9/22/2005 4:55:01 PM
yeh, there's no firewall - I ran a small server last year with apache, sshd, etc with no trouble.
9/22/2005 5:07:32 PM
I ran a pay porn site and a leet 0day warez server and no one ever noticed! omfgjk of course
9/22/2005 5:35:51 PM
Problem solved: at some point my machine lost the lease on its IP for whatever reason, and the address was assigned to another computer. Hence the pinging but nothing else.

you can (or used to be able to) have a subdomain setup by the university for free while you're in the dorms.... i had schpenxel.rh.ncsu.edu for two years.. might be worth looking into if you havent already
