So im thinking of getting a audi 1.8t a4 droptop, wondering what kind of info anybody has on that engine. pros or cons, its a 2005 a4 with 10K miles, so i dont really have a choice in upgrading to the 3.0L quattro.

good motor, commonly chipped for a solid increase in power and torque
9/22/2005 1:58:19 AM
yeah.. a chip (Revo, GIAC, APR) will definitely give you a solid power gain. there is a big aftermarket following for the 1.8t also.slap a t3/t4 in there (haha that makes it sound so easy) and it will scream...is it a quattro?
9/22/2005 2:02:56 AM
no, fwd
9/22/2005 2:03:21 AM
does the chip factor any with the warranty? this has a 100,000 certified warranty
9/22/2005 2:03:57 AM
audi should have never made a 2wd. i'd recommend finding a quattro (even one with a few more miles). a chip will void the warranty, but most chip-dealers will remove it if you need to take the car in. some also offer a "stock" mode, but if the dealer[ship] is really looking for it, they can find it[Edited on September 22, 2005 at 2:08 AM. do not, under any circumstances, buy a front trak a4
9/22/2005 7:28:06 AM
^ yeah might as well get a jetta...
9/22/2005 9:13:01 AM
id have to agree

ooh.. what'd it say?
9/22/2005 1:27:50 PM
1.8t is a good engine - in a quattro A4 5 speed, but in a FWD convertible it's not going to be much fun (echoing all the rest)
9/22/2005 1:36:03 PM
my friend w/ a chipped 1.8t A4 quattro ran w/ us at the 1/8 track and he was getting 10.5s@65mphish.. pretty slow.. i'm not sure he was launching super hard though. so quattro + chipped will be fun and it feels fast w/ the turbo lag, but its not like.. fast.why cant you get the 3.0quattro? find a little older one
9/22/2005 1:41:31 PM
haha.. lag on the stock turbo? more like it runs out of breath at about 5k rpm
9/22/2005 1:45:25 PM
compared to the instantaneous power of the mighty vr6, its laggy. "hand of god" is there. on top of that it runs out of breath up top. turbos suck
9/22/2005 1:52:34 PM
k03 turbos suck, perhaps...
9/22/2005 2:15:49 PM
9/22/2005 4:43:55 PM
9/22/2005 5:00:29 PM
i'd rather have a 1.8t jetta than a 2wd 1.8t A4.
9/23/2005 12:07:45 AM
if you are not going for performance, A4 conv is a nice ride. don't chip a brand new car. it is stupid because:1. your power delivery will not be as smooth as it is with stock boost 2. you might get surging3. it will be royal PITA to have a chip and then worry every time you visit a dealer4. stock clutch life will be significantly reducedafter warranty ends do whatever, but i really dont see much point in going through so much trouble over 3-4psi of extra boost.if you want pure performance you are looking at the wrong company all together.[Edited on September 23, 2005 at 12:39 AM. 3-4? the increase is more than that...
9/23/2005 12:38:53 AM
on giac x+ they peak at 19psi and that chip is highest on average. i think most other chips...upsolute, revo, apr hold it at anywhere from 14-17psi.stock is 11[Edited on September 23, 2005 at 12:42 AM. Reason : f]
9/23/2005 12:41:41 AM
stock is 8-1018-19 is a considerable increase from that
9/23/2005 1:06:33 AM
1in10^91. no2. no3. no5. no
9/23/2005 1:16:46 AM
well.. the clutch thing is true at least...
9/23/2005 1:20:56 AM
i hold at 17 & spike at 21. no surging, power delivery is just as smooth, it just keeps building. it is not a pain to go to the dealer. clutch life is only reduced if you can't drive to begin with.

9/23/2005 7:10:16 PM
the non-sport is around 6
9/23/2005 9:32:03 PM
stock i held at just over 11 & spiked at 12.5 (awp)
9/24/2005 1:38:48 AM
putting any sort of chip automatically voids the warrantly unless its sold and installed by the dealership
9/24/2005 3:14:43 AM
im just going by what i'm reading.1.8t is the suck anyways..
9/24/2005 10:10:03 AM
^actually if vw made 20th with VR6, that would have been my choice.
9/24/2005 11:18:25 AM
i like you more every day.
9/24/2005 11:28:35 AM
lol
9/24/2005 11:29:30 AM
9/24/2005 11:33:09 AM
no.. a chipped 1.8t will wear out a clutch MUCH faster than a stock one...
9/24/2005 11:38:16 AM
from improper driving technique.
9/24/2005 11:47:36 AM
it is not minimal. most chipped people have to replace/upgrade the clutch within a year or so.here is from vortex 1.8T technical forumhttp://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=450388&postid=11249574#11249574
9/24/2005 11:47:50 AM
1.8t's are pretty slow. My friend home has one with a chip and my other friends stock S14 beat him pretty bad.
9/24/2005 8:39:58 PM
but lets not generalize... i mean if ONE is like that, they ALL must be...
9/24/2005 8:54:57 PM
Didn't mean to generalize... just stating some real world experience. As with all cars different cars respond different to mods.
9/24/2005 9:15:20 PM
maybe your friend is just a shitty driver
9/24/2005 9:38:47 PM
Could be that too, but it's kinda hard to screw up going from a 3rd gear roll. Edit: I didn't realize you drove one. While yours may be somewhat quick take that powerplant and throw it in a much heavier car and you have less than adequate power. I will give you they are somwhat quick in some of the lighter V dubs, but still not fast with just a chip.[Edited on September 24, 2005 at 9:51 PM. Reason : ...]
9/24/2005 9:48:01 PM
i dont have a 1.8t
9/24/2005 10:30:49 PM
S14 stock is way slower car than 1.8T. any speed, any gear, roll, no roll...i've driven my friends S13 which is actually lighter than S14 with identical power and car was nowhere near GTI. MAYBE as fast as automatic 1.8T passatits pointless to even talk about it.6.5sec 0-60mph and 93-96mph trap speeds stock are plenty fast for a daily driver[Edited on September 25, 2005 at 1:29 AM. Reason : f]
9/25/2005 1:26:53 AM
It was not a GTI, you assumed it was. This was an A4 like the thread starter was interested in. An AWD A4 from a roll is not too fast at all.
9/25/2005 4:53:35 PM
oh ok....yeah, they are on heavy side so it is quite possible.
9/25/2005 6:03:20 PM
