My roomate got the Hitachi 50v500 (LCD Rear Projection) the other day and we were anxious to see some XBOX games at 480P (and a few in 720P). The games looked pretty good at 480i, but when I enabled the 480P, 720P, and 1080i options in the dashboard, every game I put in looks like pixelated ass. The TV is registering a 480P signal but it just isn't playable. Is there a setting I can change or anything like that? The games I've tried are Halo 2 and PGR 2 (and Dead or Alive 3 but it's not 480p, looks great though). We are going to borrow X-Men Legends which is 720P to see if it's any better, but I'd like to have progressive scan sword fights if possible. Thanks in advance

something is fucked up on the tv, because 480p looks money on everything
9/7/2005 2:12:20 PM
oh shit don't tell me that. its very possible as this was the floor model. we have 30 days to send it back so i guess i'll double check some settings and then we might have to call up circuit city and tell them to come get it. this saddens me.p.s. if a component video cable was faulty, could this happen or would it just not work?[Edited on September 7, 2005 at 2:18 PM. take the xbox and cables to a friends hdtv and retest it. Are you using component cables or just three rca cables?
9/7/2005 2:30:04 PM
they are the component cables that came with the madcatz a/v pack. i'm actually going to a friends house tonight that has an hdtv so i'll test the box and cables there.
9/7/2005 2:40:10 PM
what's the native resolution? if you're running a LCD or DLP screen at a non-native resolution, it could look like ass
9/7/2005 3:53:12 PM
it's 720P. thats why i want to try a 720p game out before entering panic mode
9/7/2005 4:01:36 PM
9/7/2005 4:03:15 PM
if the tv is 720p native, then it will have to upconvert a 480p signal. this process could make it look poopy. i like my good ol CRT RP HDTV.. handles them all perfectly.. yesss
9/7/2005 4:32:37 PM
Do you have the same problem when you play a DVD movie on your TV? (You'll have to try it with a DVD player because the XBOX will only play movies in 480i.)

you'll have to excuse Noen, he got drunk one night and plugged a few laxatives to see what would happen... ever since then he's been spewing shit from the wrong end
9/8/2005 5:46:44 AM
smheath - i don't have a dvd player other than the xbox, so i'll have to borrow one from someone.quinn - i remember options for running at 16:9 standard, 4:3, 4:3 zoom, 4:3 stretched, 16:9 zoom (maybe), and maybe one more, but i'll look again.Incognegro -

damn it's not my tv and i didn't drop a wad of cash. i did read the manual though and didn't get far with that. if i knew all the answers then i wouldn't have come here then would i? i appreciate the help but if i have to tiptoe around you to avoid a pms response, then i'll look elsewhere.
9/8/2005 2:08:26 PM
I was responding to the trolling on me.I'm still of the opinion that its something wrong with the tv.Which is what they are saying too, just that they want to try and make me look wrong. [Edited on September 8, 2005 at 2:39 PM. Reason : /]
9/8/2005 2:38:39 PM
alright then i apologize for my last post. i didn't even make it home for more than 10 minutes yesterday so i didn't get a chance to look at anything. today i will THOROUGHLY read the manual and make sure there is no screen calibration needed. or at least make the guy who owns the tv do it
9/8/2005 2:49:52 PM
um, actually, no-one has come remotely close to agreeing with you Noen, I think everyone except you pretty much agrees that "pixelated ass" would be a sure sign of running a non-native resolution on a fixed-resolution screen, and is not really anything he can help...

dvds look crappy on dlp/lcd hdtvs , oh yeah they are 480p , funny....
9/8/2005 5:37:27 PM
uh, not really no. And certainly not like "pixelated ass"I have a feeling he just doesnt understand what an xbox looks like in high def. Without the massinve aliasing and blur that a regular tv provides.
9/8/2005 5:44:15 PM
480p looks just as bad as a normal signal, just a tad less pixelated. hence it looks like ass. cuz 480p is not special. i have nothing else to say. yep.
9/8/2005 5:46:04 PM
you just brought this thread to a new level of idiocy. Please shut up and go away scottyc
9/8/2005 7:12:13 PM
yeah and straight lines will appear cleaner without jagged edges.i would be worried if i paid money for a tv and it made 480p look so bad i had to post on a message board.
9/8/2005 8:34:18 PM
hey now, my last name starts with a "P" that brings a whole new level of your face.
9/8/2005 9:00:56 PM
ok it looks just as bad with XMEN Legends at 720p. at closer look, there is almost a ghosting effect going on. i called customer support at hitachi and as soon as they asked me what source i was viewing (xbox) they said fuck off. "we don't support or recommend using the xbox".unless we can find a way to fix whatever problem there is, they will have an extra tv in stock soon. thanks for the help and sorry the thread turned into a mild bitch fest

better cables or a whole new HD pack? would the xbox branded hd pack be that much better than madcatz?
9/8/2005 10:59:10 PM
in all seriousness...I have the official HD pack and it looks pretty nice. Of course, I'm running it on a Sony Tube so YMMV.
9/8/2005 11:04:21 PM
i'm running high-def xbox on my ToshibaHD. decent. not as badass as i wanted.
9/8/2005 11:35:24 PM
this shit cracks me upNoen talking about a "new level of idiocy" and suggesting better cablesexcuse me while I blast off on a rocket plume of involuntary diarrheaas my body attempts to cope with the overwhelming ironyif you put your head any further up your ass you'll pop through the flesh of your back and start on a second passis there any way to get it through to you that you are the most misinformed and self-important idiot I have ever had the misfortune of sharing a message board with?I'm not trolling, I'm not jealous, I promise you. I have a Hitachi rear projection (not LCD though) and 480p looks fine from my Xbox. I wont go as far as saying it looks "money", but its definitely pretty good. Also, 480p is NOT HD...its just progressive SD...FYI.
9/9/2005 5:32:45 AM
It looks like the MadCatz HD pack was the culprit after all. The official Xbox HD pack looks much better. I didn't do any thourough testing like the new pack with the old cables, old cables with the new pack, etc. but it works now and thats enough for me. Thanks for everyone's help. Hopefully next time we can solve the problem without all the bullshit comments.

I think the only debate was whether scaled output looks as good as native resolution. And the cables by MadCatz are pretty shitty if you read reviews on the Internet.More so with the XBOXthere are countless instances of only the Monster cables or the official Microsoft pack working well.

No, it's got the same degree of experience behind it.Perhaps you missed the threads I posted about doing cable impedence testing last fall, or the conclusions I drew from that testing (with the tutilage of an EE with 18 years of experience by my side) was that there are MAJOR differences in output accuracy and impedence mismatching in low end cables. As soon as he said he saw ghosting, it becomes 99.9% probable that the cables are the problem. If you know what CAUSES ghosting, especially on synced signals like vga and component hd, you'd also know that impedence mismatch on shitty cables is the likely culprit. So eat my ass, you are DEAD FUCKING WRONG, AGAIN. Way to TRY to call me out though.

I stand behind that statement. Put 480p beside SD on ANY damn lcd plasma, projector, or rear projection, and 480p looks money. Configuring the tv properly should be a given. Will it look as good as 720p or 1080i? Obviously not, since it's running what, half the resolution and probably being interpolated. But it's still MONEY over any analog signal.
9/12/2005 9:25:29 PM
hahaYou probably read some information where someone else did the testing and you are passing it off like you did it.Either way, its cute to see you rebutt everything thrown at you. Also, it will be cute when/if you get irate at me for making this comment.
