this is driving me nuts. I'm trying to get a feel for m coupe depreciation and model year values so that I can decide whether it's worth trying to track one down and I've been on all the used-car boards (autobytel, cars.com, autotrader.com), and most of them seem to have issue with the idea that there was ever a car referred to as the "m coupe" and ebay is a bitch too, you can go ebaymotors>BMW>Passenger Vehicles> M-Series>... but from there you practically have to sort out the M3s and find the 2 or 3 m coupes for sale. Anyone know off the top of their heads what year the M coupe got the 315 hp motor? I'm gonna take a stab at it and say thay they did it for the 2002 models when the e46 m3 was on the way for model year 2003. Is that right? and do those depreciate a lot slower than the earlier 240 hp models?edit: Autotrader returned 3 cars for search: "M-Coupe", "2001-2003"2 Mini coopers and a z3 3.0 coupe with M-coupe wheels. What The Fuck. If I looked up a 325i, would I get a z8? dammit.[Edited on September 4, 2005 at 2:03 AM. Reason : ....]

i suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder, b/c I think it looks pretty sweet. its squat man.... flared rear fenders, long hood, I even like the way the hatch comes down to a hard crease at the base of the rear glass. it's hot. Even if you don't like the styling, it has an m3 engine in a z3 sized body, plus decent storage for a car that size. you could put a small drunk friend in the back if you needed to give him a ride home after gettin a little wild at a bar, even if you already were someone else's ride. I haven't driven one yet, but I bet it makes an s2000 feel gutless. I realize they were never all that popular, but the results I've had trying to look for used ones, you'd think they were 850csi's or something. It suddenly strikes me that there were the first e46's around when I was in high school, which means there's no way the e46 m3 came out as late as I was thinking. maybe it was 2000 or 2001... shit, there's a probably a lot more 315hp m coupes out there than I was thinking...[Edited on September 4, 2005 at 2:37 AM. They're a ton of fun on the track, though a bit too impractical for everyday driving. The suspension is probably the stiffest (seat of pants observation - no numbers to back it up) fitted to any stock BMW that I've driven, and on the roads around here that would get old quickly. 2001 saw the introduction of the 315hp engine in both the M-roadster and M-coupe.They have an exceptionally loyal following though - it's hard to find one under $18k, even the old 240hp versions. Check roadfly as well- they have classifieds categories specifically for the MZ3 models. Also, the outside bolsters on the seat wll invariably be worn - b/c unless the previous owner was a 160lb or less dwarf it takes a bit of sliding/adjustment to get situated in the seat - very low roof line - I'm 6' and the helmet was sliding on the headliner during my time in the car.

My tips on the topic...look on bimmerforums, dtm power, etc. There are plenty of online forums that can help you out - typically these are the fanatics anyway; they know damn well what the car's worth and how to take care of it in most instances.I found my roadster through autotrader; so keep checking. You're right though, it's a bitch to find M cars in general that aren't normal M3s. BTW, when it comes to parts for these things, the same is true. And it was '01 for the s54 motor. Mike

awesome. I'll keep it on the table. Ahmet, I've heard the earlier (single vanos? s52?) engine is more reliable than the later S54. Is that true? If so, would that make a supercharged s52 a more appealing proposition than a stock s54? hmmm?

Well, a lot of S54s have had internal engine problems. It does appear that the S52 is a stronger engine (there's def. more aftermarket for it). I only suggested that option as it maybe hard to find S54 cars. One of those would be my personal choice, but unnatural aspiration on an early car would be lots of fun.Ahmet

The consensus is oil pumps now? When I was interested in these back in 02 or so, I seem to recall the "problem" being con rod failures. BMW wasn't doing a good job with warranty claims back then (I guess kind of like the nikasil/alusil block problems from last decade).Ahmet
9/13/2005 7:16:11 AM
Well BMW never really reconized the oil pump nut issue on the S52 either
