Yeah, and everyone thought Pitt would be a tough game for them.

For ND to be "back," though, it'll take more than a few games or one good year (don't forget that Ty was 10-2 his first year there).

^^ Why? Michigan [and ND for that matter] doesn't have that strong a defense. If Weis calls a good game then I see no reason why it would be a blowout. They beat them last year with far less of a team. I'm not saying ND will win but to think it will be a blowout.. i just don't see that..

ND's schedule is no tougher than pretty much that of any other team in a major conference. They scheduled teams that have recognizable names from the past but aren't worth shit now (Syracuse, Washington, BYU, and Stanford... hell, Mighigan State and Purdue ain't exactly studs either). Michigan, Tennessee, and Pitt is no different than what an ACC, SEC, or Big 12 teams faces in conference (like us playing VaTech, FSU, and BC).

Don't believe the hype. Big Blue will crush them.

^^ umm a lot of people are predicting Purdue to win the Big 10. Granted it's because they don't play OSU or Michigan but they aren't some schlub team..

I'll go on record saying this. Notre Dame 31 - Michigan 28. If I'm wrong so be it.

and Tenn, Mich, Purdue, USC >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> FSU, BC, VT

Purdue always looks strong in the preseason and early on then when the competition really comes they collapse. Everyone knows that the Big Ten gets overinflated because its "glory days" football. I used to fall for the Purdue hype but never again. Last year was the last straw.

Yeah, so listing NCSU's opponents wasn't the best of choices... but just take a look at your typical SEC team or someone in the ACC who doesn't have a pass on the top dogs and you'll see that ND's schedule is pretty typical.

I disagree about the schedule plain and simple.. sure teams like Syracuse and Pitt (although I feel as the season progresses they will be pretty good still) aren't as good as their glory years but you still have USC (#1), Michigan (#3), Tennessee (#6), Purdue (#13), Michigan State (#39), and a very tough Navy team (just ask Maryland -- who Navy throughouly manhandled even though UMd somehow won)..

No team in the country plays a schedule with 4 Top 13 teams on it I would bet.. plus there are no typical cupcakes like a Michigan has with an Eastern Michigan or a down year NIU.

As the season plays out I would bet the only team in the country that has a comparable schedule ranking to ND is Ohio State [I would say Texas but both A&M and OU losing hurt that already] with games against #2, #3, #8, #32, #36 and #39

USC #1 - Overrated. Losing Chow is gonna hurt big. 3 losses would not surprise me in the least. They will get decimated in their New Years Bowl.
Michigan #3 - Overrated. They definitely haven't lived up to their billing the last few years. The Big Ten gets more props then it should, really.
Tennesee #6 - Overrated. Tennessee has had its share of QB controversies in the past but usually its just decind who is the best and not who sucks the least.
Purdue #13 - See previous post.

Early season rankings are pointless anyways but there are plenty of teams who have it tough based on them... just look at #23 Virginia (#7 VaTech, #11 FSU, #14 Miami, #17 Ga Tech, #19 BC). Or UNC (#7 VaTech, #12 Louisville, #14 Miami, #17 Ga Tech, #19 BC, #23 UVA) How about Ga Tech (#7 Va Tech, #9 Georgia, #14 Miami, #16 Auburn, #23 UVa, #25 Clemson, and an undervalued NCSU). FSU takes on a bnuch too (#9 Miami, #10 FLorida, #19 BC, #23 UVa, #25 Clemson, and NCSU). Look at someone like Kentucky who plays #5 LSU, #6 Tenn, #9 UGa, #11 FSU (thats 4 in the top [i]11[/1] and none of them named Purdue. My point is that Notre Dame's schedule soudns a lot more impressive than it actually is because of the names. Plenty of teams have just as tough, if not tougher schedules, top to bottom.

No cupcakes? Washington, Stanford, and BYU in their current state are essentially cupcakes. They aren't just not good, they are bad.

You honestly think Syracuse will be pretty good? Did you see their game at all? 103 yards of total offense and 0/15 on third down conversions. They aren't going to do shit.

so basically your saying you think everyone on NDs schedule is overrated. Fair enough. I say the same about all the ACC teams pretty much outside of Va Tech. Like I said. When the season plays out I feel that the two teams with the best SOS will be OSU and ND.. we'll see.

Oh and I never said Syracuse will be good.. Pitt I believe will be a decent team though..

You seem to be totally discounting the Big 10 and overhyping the ACC.. which happens every single year on this message board.. when all is said and done every single year, the Big 10 proves to be the better conference..

When I said USC/Tenn/UM were overrated I didn't men they weren't good, just that they weren't the best in the country good. UM will have its typical 2 losses. Tennessee will lose to UGa, LSU, and probably Florida. And USC will just be settling back down to reality. They are stil some of the best teams in the country. You might say that about the ACC but as of right the upper half has made a good showing for OOC (taking out Texas A&M and Auburn). Of course its all speculation and still too early to tell for any of this.

Sorry, I read "Syracuse and Pitt (although I feel as the season progresses they will be pretty good still)" as applying to both but see how you could have meant only Pitt. Yeah, Pitt will be fine.

I'm a Big 10 fan. I grew up in Illinois and have always been a Michigan fan (so not at all biased against ND ). I discount them because they haven't lived up to their billing the last few years. How does the Big 10 prove to be the better conference at the end of the year? If anything the Big Ten always falls apart at the end of the year (very lackluster in bowl games). Every year the Big Ten is supposed to be neck and neck with the SEC as the best in the country and they always disappoint. I love the Big Ten but they are not what they used to be.

Here are what the power ratings say about SOS:

Rank	Team PR	PS	SOS
64 North Carolina 0.519 0.519 0.843
107 Temple 0.303 0.317 0.744
18 Georgia Tech 0.704 0.644 0.729
79 Arizona 0.442 0.418 0.725
84 Washington 0.420 0.448 0.725
1 USoCal 0.895 0.887 0.722
59 Northwestern 0.551 0.525 0.721
66 Stanford 0.518 0.518 0.715
39 Maryland 0.636 0.615 0.700
26 Notre Dame 0.671 0.626 0.695
31 UCLA 0.655 0.624 0.680
5 Oklahoma 0.788 0.872 0.670
36 Colorado 0.644 0.628 0.670
12 Tennessee 0.759 0.752 0.665
35 Clemson 0.649 0.630 0.665
77 Wake Forest 0.453 0.497 0.665
118 Wild Card U 0.240 0.237 0.662
28 Minnesota 0.661 0.630 0.658
9 Virginia Tech 0.776 0.756 0.656
22 Wisconsin 0.694 0.674 0.656
103 Duke 0.334 0.353 0.655
10 Ohio State 0.772 0.756 0.642
24 Virginia 0.690 0.685 0.642
27 Arizona State 0.666 0.650 0.641
94 Kentucky 0.384 0.389 0.641

FYI, NCSU came in at #40. Higher than I expected.

Conference	PR	PS	SOS
ACC 0.636 0.633 0.665
Pac 10 0.63 0.621 0.659

Is this based on 1 week though? It's a moot point until it's futher along in the season I guess..

** also, isn't SOS only for games played already.. not based on future games?

There was a YTD category just after the SOS one that handled only games played. This SOS is for the whole year (otherwise NCSU wouldn't be #40 in SOS after having just played a top 10 team).

Honestly, rankings and SOS are pointless at this point of the season. You can say ND is playing 4 top 13 teams and I can point numerous other similar tough schedules but these rankings aren't going to apply at the end of the season. We really don't know how good or bad some of these teams are gonna be. I'm just trying to nip the ND love-fest in the bud the best I can.

Michigan will be a good test for Notre Dame. But I'm hoping the Irish beat Michigan so that I can watch in person the Boilermakers of Purdue give them their first loss.

Quote from above:

"ND's schedule is no tougher than pretty much that of any other team in a major conference. They scheduled teams that have recognizable names from the past but aren't worth shit now (Syracuse, Washington, BYU, and Stanford... hell, Mighigan State and Purdue ain't exactly studs either). Michigan, Tennessee, and Pitt is no different than what an ACC, SEC, or Big 12 teams faces in conference (like us playing VaTech, FSU, and BC)."

Ok. Lets compare to NC State, which I would say is a normal major conference schedule.

Notre Dame:

09/03 at #23 Pittsburgh W 42-21
09/10 at #3 Michigan 12:00 PM
09/17 Mich St 2:30 PM
09/24 at Washington 3:30 PM
10/01 at #13 Purdue TBD
10/15 #1 USC 3:30 PM
10/22 BYU 2:30 PM
11/05 #6 Tennessee 2:30 PM
11/12 Navy 1:00 PM
11/19 Syracuse 2:30 PM
11/26 at Stanford 3:30 PM

NC State:

09/04 #8 Va Tech L 20-16
09/17 E Kentucky 6:00 PM
09/24 UNC TBD
10/06 at #17 Ga Tech 7:30 PM
10/13 #25 Clemson 7:30 PM
10/22 at W Forest TBD
10/29 So Miss TBD
11/05 at #11 Florida St TBD
11/12 at #19 BC TBD
11/19 M Tenn St 1:00 PM
11/26 Maryland TBD

A point to Notre Dame for not having a I-AA team. Another point to Notre Dame for not having a Sun Belt team. Another point to Notre Dame for having 5 road games versus NC State's 4.

Notre Dame has 6 teams on their schedule that could compete for their conference championship, and 3 that could compete for the national championship. NC State has 1 team on their schedule that could compete for the national championship.

Comparing likeable games: At Pitt is probably on the level of Southern Miss at home. At Washington is probably the same as at Boston College. Navy and Maryland are pretty much equal (see game last week). BYU at home is probably the same as at Wake Forest. Clemson at home versus Michigan State at home is probably the same (a bit of a stretch but I'll give benefit of the doubt).

So that leaves:

at Michigan, at Purdue, USC, Tennessee, Syracuse, at Stanford

versus

Virginia Tech, Eastern Kentucky, North Carolina, at Georgia Tech, at Florida State, Middle Tennessee State

Hands down, Notre Dame wins. Their season ticket holders get to see so many good games. I'm jealous, we get the power of EKU and the Mid Tenners.

Why are you comparing ND to NCSU to assert or at least imply that ND has national relevance?

NCSU certainly isn't there. ND is a comparably mediocre program, but is not in the same league as Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, USC, Miami, or FSU.

However, their fans have this delusion that they are, in fact, up there.

Not so much anymore.

funny thing is, ND beat 2 of those wonderful programs just last year

nobody thinks that ND is on the level of USC or Oklahoma at this point

but only fucking morons think that the 5 or 6 dominant teams will be the 5 or 6 dominant teams for perpetuity.

ps: if you read flying ryan's post he was purely illustrating the strength of ND's schedule not saying that NCST was a powerhouse

haha the quote about puttin 28 up in the first half, they couldnt even put a touchdown up the whole game until 3 left in the 4th

If anyone thinks Notre Dames defense is not good enough to accentuate this offense, you are highly retarded. They have played quite solid, told you this team was one to watch...i dont see them losing a game except to maybe USC and its possible they could beat them I think.

gotta remember they dont show the replay at home if its a good call...sort of a instigation thing

lets not get ahead of ourselves

the ND secondary is not good, theres no way around it

they are always solid up front...they lost more than half the starters off a horrible defensive team last year. They are playing solid right now, and hopefully it continues
