opeth is decent, but there's a whole passal of bands that have that same fucking sound - I.E. in flames, etc.

LMAO, but paerabol is right. Opeth are in a league of their own. You can't compare them to bands like In Flames....they are much more than that.

I just got back from Best Buy with the new album...paid 11.99 for it \m/\m/

Great to hear it finally with a much better sound...and it's cool to see the lyrics as well. This is definately the darkest Opeth album to date, I love it.

Can't wait for a tour of the US

^^^I'd say it's their best since My Arms, Your Hearse. I still enjoy the first three more though, but completely blows Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation out of the water.

Bunch of tracks here destined to become classics. Ghost Of Perdition, Reverie/Harlequin Forest, and Isolation Years (possibly the best album closer for Opeth since To Bid You Farewell).

The album is fucking incredible, though I would expect no less...I don't really agree with it being their darkest album, in fact I think it's even subtly optimistic in a dark way. or something. My Arms, Your Hearse in my opinion is still their darkest...

but even though ghost reveries is still very distinctly opeth, it does show quite a progression for them. I read somewhere that someone made the observation that when Opeth first started they were more of a death metal band with progressive tendencies, and that now they're progressive with death metal tendencies; I think that fits it perfectly. This album is a little more epic, a little less crunchy and riff-based. I think a lot of it has to do with the permanent addition of Wiberg, there is definitely more keyboard and synth in this album than any of their past (excluding Damnation).

I've been listening to it for a few weeks now, since it leaked (thanks to MetalRed for the hookup) and honestly I don't think it will be one of my favorites; I still think Still Life is my favorite. Even though I LOVE GR, there are just some things that don't impress me as much as I could have expected, mainly just in some of the more simplistic riffing (e.g. the beginning and ending of The Grand Conjuration, meh). Don't get me wrong, there is PLENTY of insanely genius material on the album, but there's just something about it that won't let it settle in my mind as topping some of their previous work. Kindof for the same reason I didn't like Blackwater Park quite as much as the rest of their albums; although it's a beautiful and amazing work, there's just a hint of overproduction and the loss of that "underground" feel, for lack of a better word.

All that aside, BUY THIS ALBUM. They've broken some new ground, most notably in the song Atonement which is almost a Doors-y psychadelic jam, and in Hours of Wealth where Akerfeldt really shows off his vocal capability in a blues-ish a capella piece. They've also emphasized their own style of jazz influence, and there are a couple fusion-style breakdowns that are fucking genius. I could sit here and go on forever about each song on there and tell you why this album is brilliant, but where's the fun in that...go listen to it

^ i don't know about "completely blows Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation out of the water"...I like it better than BwP, but it's at least on par with Deliverance and you can't really compare it to Damnation. and you already know how I feel about Still Life \m/

anyway,

I agree with this album being more of a progressive album with death influences.

I've never really gotten into Still Life that much. Sure, The Moor, Godhead's Lament, Face Of Melinda, and Moonlapse Vertigo are great tracks, but I don't care much for the others. It's never really hit home with as a whole album. Usually when I dig out Still Life I listen to those tracks. It's strange, because I LOVE all of the other Opeth albums, even Orchid. *shrug*

I'd still rank My Arms, Your Hearse as my favorite though.

^ The Moor is probably my favorite Opeth song...but Benighted, White Cluster, and Serenity Painted Death are probably my other three favorites on that album. I don't know what it is about that cd but there's just some passion to it that I can identify with (as corny as that sounds) even more than the rest of their albums. But of course I love every one of their albums, they just dont have the capacity to write less-than-brilliant music. I love My Arms, Your Hearse too...it's just so dark and depressing in a piss-off kind of way, and musically amazing. I'm a big fan of their older (pre-Martins) like you too

damn i could go on forever

this is the album cover i keep seeing online, but mine doesn't have "Opeth" or "Ghost Reveries" on it, just the picture and no words. anyone else's like this, and know if it's a special edition or something?

Same here.

As far as favorites go, i cant say i really have one. Each and every one of their albums has been stellar, but also quite different from the next, like chapters in a novel. I think its pretty difficult to compare one album to the next.

That said, I havent been listening to much else since i got this rip a couple weeks ago. Ill be picking up my actual copy next week.

agreed, that's a great way to put it...but you can still have one you prefer to listen to over the others, if you had to make a choice. i say still life is my favorite because i've called it my "favorite" longer than the other albums, though i've definitely rotated that favorite status through all the albums multiple times...so who knows if it'll stay that way.

Music video for The Grand Conjuration: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/artists/Opeth/video.aspx

That video was pretty cool until that zorro dude showed up. Keep the hot chick and the nurse though

Interesting Lopez isn't in the video....I guess he was still in treatment for his blood condition when they filmed it. Gene Hoglan is the man though
