after riding the bike for a good portion of the day i went to my dorm room to take a shower, come back and i turn the key to the on position.. headlights come on and u hear the bike getting ready to start (it's a wining sound bikes make b4 u start them) well all of the sudden the lights go out and that's all she wrote it wont turn over bc there is no electrical poewr to the bike. the lights didnt dim or anything just shut off.. weird as hell..it's a carb'd 97gsxr600. i dont think it's the battery, i guess ill check the fuses tomorrow?they are under the seat i think?
8/27/2005 2:19:17 AM
I had a shorted stator that kept taking out rectifierscheck resistance on the stator windings
8/27/2005 2:27:58 AM
the only prob is the bike is in front of owen hall ... stuck there this sounds like it's going to be expensive FUCK.
8/27/2005 2:43:42 AM
whining is the electric fuel pump. sounds like something electrical. check the battery connections first, then make sure the battery has a charge. then fuses.
8/27/2005 2:47:40 AM
if it was a honda, i'd say rectifier...but i don't know. still could be.but yeah...^ easy, quick, cheap, simple things first.
8/27/2005 4:01:48 AM
pull the battery and take to to Advane have them check it, that shoul dbe first, and also cause it's free... now if it is good then more to the rectifer, they go bad on sportbike from time to time especially in the summer when it's hot cause they can't dissapate heat well.. My bet is on the battery, they don't last forever
8/27/2005 10:21:21 AM
i mean wouldnt it just dim. the bike just lost power. also kind of weird that same day the bike turned off twice on me like it just lost power, this was right after i started it up, i checked the kick stand to make sure it was ok. and it was ok so i just started the bitch up again and got on my way. yeah it gets really hot during the day time.thanks you guys for the help[Edited on August 27, 2005 at 10:45 AM. Reason : btw]
8/27/2005 10:45:21 AM
btw what the hell is a rectifier?, where is it locatedo on the bike?[Edited on August 27, 2005 at 10:56 AM. Reason : a]
8/27/2005 10:56:39 AM
The rectifier is a sealed package of diodes that changes the AC power created by the stator to a DC level that keeps the battery charged while the bike is running if it is the rectifier, you gotta find out what caused it to go, i.e. the stator is what causedmine to blow a diodeif you dont fix the cause, it can and will get very expensive replacing rectifiers and batteriesi know from experiencemine was located on the throttle side of the motorcycle (right side, sitting on the bike), kindaunder the rear fairing, near the seatjust trace the wires from the battery[Edited on August 27, 2005 at 11:47 AM. Reason : location]

i'd check your main ignition fuse, should be near the battery, with the problems you are having, it will be something between the battery post and main ignition relay, which on most bikes is all within about 8 inches of the battery, so it shouldn't be hard to trck down the problem.
8/27/2005 12:03:14 PM
i tested the battery at advanced and the machine said it was bad. so i bought a new one. i just added the acid to the new one..and it is being charged at advanced as we speak. i guess the battery was bad? doesnt make sense... im thinking it was that rectifier thing. i found it on my bike it's on the left rear fairing near the rear seat.. was it dumb for me to buy a new battery they said the old one was bad from the test, i saw the machine it said it was bad.thanks guysKYle
8/27/2005 5:35:22 PM
no, you obviously needed a new battery anyway. now we'll see if that was the problem. it's uncommon for a battery to suddenly die like that, but not completely unlikely.
8/27/2005 6:26:39 PM
hmmm im getting the battery charged now i hate my bike.
8/27/2005 9:21:39 PM
No reason to hate a bike for something that happens to damn near EVERYBODY who owns one from time to time. Most bike batteries have shit for reserve capacity, so too much cranking (i.e. when you run out of gas or fucking flood the damn thing) will run one down in nothing flat. The older the battery is, the easier it runs down. I used to do it all the time on this old Radian I was riding. Ditto for my roommate's old Honda CM450.
8/27/2005 11:18:46 PM
hey i know but the bike has fucked up so many times it's not even funny and the guy without the jet kit had the bike and i rode it and it was faster than mine but im not sure about up top, will bputting an exhaust on my bike, header back make it faster bc i th9ink it will.im npot sure but i hope with the jet kit my bike becomes faster *warning drunk post ***
8/28/2005 3:32:01 AM
a jet kit alone will probably hurt performanceyou probably wont notice any significant difference until you get an exhaust and possibly some type of higher flow air filter (k & n filtercharger is what i have)i never had to deal with the in between performance stages though, i was luckyi got my exhaust, jet kit, filter charger and ignition advancing all done at the same timeso there was a huge difference over stock for me
8/28/2005 4:46:32 AM
^ah ok i hear yah so when that full exhaust comes the bitch will run better. i think it has a k&n on it already, unless the previous owner was a ricer and put that sticker on the clutch cover hah.. i was going to check one day but too lazy to remove all the screws attached to the airbox to open it up.
8/28/2005 1:10:49 PM
the sticker comes with the filteryah, that would be dumb to just put a sticker on there
8/28/2005 6:31:33 PM
hehe kyle, your bike sucks. Its not playing well. stupid electrical problems now. fuses are fine and the new batt should be charged (unless its not holding the charge). Anyone else have an idea what the problem could be? I didnt have the tools to take the fenders off and look at the wiring.
8/28/2005 6:48:08 PM
pfft i know its a piece.
8/28/2005 9:19:29 PM
so it was the battry
8/28/2005 9:32:11 PM
no it's something else much more expensive
8/28/2005 9:34:31 PM
its the new battery, nothing is powered, and yes, we did hook it up the terminals correctly

more often than not the main gets overlooked, it should be a 25-30 amp one by itself, most people check the accessory fuse box with 4-5 10 amp fuses.
8/29/2005 5:10:35 PM
ok fuses werent fine, found a 30 fuse on the right side of the bike next to the recip whatever rectifier. it was blown.. i replaced it.. the bike ran for maybe 30 secs, then shut off agian. started again gave it a lil rev and the fuse blew again doh..
8/29/2005 8:24:02 PM
eh i have some guy who is a friend of a friends fixing it, he has the volmeter thing not me. rofl.
8/29/2005 8:24:46 PM
did u check the ignition fuse yet? same thing happened to me but the entire fuse holder melted but the fuse didnt blow...took me forever to figure it out cus the fuse was fine
9/3/2005 6:48:50 PM
his bike is working now, the guy came over to take the bike to his garage and someone called the cops on him sayin someone was stealing his bike. haha
9/3/2005 10:29:53 PM
thats actually a good thing

the amount of money you spent on your bike, you could have gotten a decent 2000+ R6
9/5/2005 2:03:59 PM
if i could forsee the future i would have done that, i dont like r6's u mean a newer gixxer
