Learn "goodbye blue sky" by Pink Floyd. It's not very hard to play, but sounds good and should be helpful.

isn't "stairway..." everybody's first song?

nirvana, green day, and other 3chord bands are always good beginner stuff...howie day is very simple, lay off DMB for a while...anything ac/dc is cake

play around with a C, G, Am, F progression...its like 4000 songs

Anything by Necrophagist or Dream Theater should do the trick.

http://www.mxtabs.net
http://www.wholenote.com
http://www.guitartricks.com

All of those sites have links to basic beginner lessons. Hopefully it will be of some use to you. Guitar is a wonderful thing.

anything in the Country music genre is easy. If you like classic rock...Eagles and Tom Petty might be a good start. For something more modern...you might wanna try Ryan Cabrera's stuff. I don't like his music too much...but its really easy guitar stuff.

Actually, I've seen "Me and Bobby McGee" as the first or second song in lots of beginner guitar books.

smells like teen spirit... that'll get your power chords crankin

seriously though, if you haven't got a guitar yet, I suggest starting on an acoustic, even if you plan to move on to an electric... it's not the definite way to go, but it's definitely easier to play electric guitar after playing acoustic guitar for a while, rather than vice versa... good luck...

Free Falling was the first song I learned--then I went on and picked up some other Petty songs, too.

here's an idea. Find songs you like, then look up the tabs. If you can't play those songs... practice more.

This is a pretty good list of beginner songs. Free Fallin and Knockin' On Heaven's Door would be the two to start with.

The first song I learned to play on the guit-fiddle was Cat Scratch Fever.

It's not bad at all.

Yeah, we have all seen Waynes World. That is the only source I can think of where people originally got this idea.

StH is not the easiest song to play - if you play it right that is. You see, songs took actual musical talent to play 2 or 3 decades ago. Anything made in the past 10 years should be an easy play.

smoke on the water, to promote a cliche

silverchair and STP are pretty easy things to get the hang of, the biggest thing is takin up reading tablature online

www.postanote.com has one of the best libraries i've been able to find, it has no ads and has skins you can get when you sign in with a user name. (some friends started it and it rocks)

I would recommend doin' it the old fashoined way. Start with the major chord pattern (I ii iii IV V vi vii VIII). Listen to any song you want to learn, and use the major chord pattern. Probably 8 out of 10 times you will find that the song is derived from this pattern. In two or three months and with a little practice, you will be ear trained better than most people who have been playing for 2 or 3 years nowadays. ALWAYS TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE THEORY BEHIND THE NOTES AND CHORDS.

Ex. You notice that a song is in the key of C.

The Major interval pattern is W W H W W W H.

I ii iii IV V vi vii VIII
C D E F G A B C

The chords possible in the key of C are as follows:
C major which is the I or "tonic" in musical terminology
D minor which is ii
E minor which is iii
F major which is IV
G major which is V
A minor which is vi
B augmented which is vii
C major which is written above as VIII but is also I

there are several songs in here that would be WAY too hard for any beginner to play correctly. if you started on those songs, you were faking them or fucking them up.

Beatles / Dylan

There are a few that might have more complex chords, or that might be a little too fast, but for the most part it's the same chords over and over.

Out of curiosity, how many of the other people in here who play guitar sing when they play?

I cant sing, so i dont bother.

I also play more metal than anything else lately, so im sure as hell not gonna sit there and growl while i play either.

I also dont care about lyrics.

I'd start with some Hendrix, get the easy stuff out of the way first, haha, j/k. I've always heard you should start with Stairway.

i can sing pretty well, and depending on the song, sometimes i can sing and play at the same time (only when playing rhythm, and only if it's not too complicated). both my singing and playing ability go downhill when i do, though, so i don't do it much.

The only hard Hendrix stuff is the rhythm.
