I use wireless in my apartment. I just got a laptop and when I try to connect to the internet wireless it says "Limited or no Connectivity". If I go into the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties, if I change it from "obtain an IP address automatically" to "use the following IP address" I can get it to work but it is really slow. What can I do to fix the problem and get the laptop to "obtain an IP address automatically"? I took it to the store I got it from and it worked fine there. I guess something on my router is not letting the laptop obtain an IP address automatically. HELP!

It is a Linksys WRT54G. What does enabling DHCP do? I am lost when it comes to this type of stuff!

Make sure your computer is actually trying to join the right router and not one from three apartments down. It sounds like you are getting weak signal from a router far away and windows is jumping on it.

Hmm...I have a WRT54G router and a new laptop and didn't have a problem.
This may be an idiot suggestion...but maybe try turning the computer off (as well as the desktop if the router is hooked to a desktop as well). Then unplug the router and the cable modem. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes. And plug in the modem first, let it start up and connect, then plug in the router and let it get a signal... then turn on the computer(s) and see if that helps. That is how I set mine up. Like i said, i don't know a lot about them either so that may be a stupid suggestion.

something about assigning a dynamic IP to a system..so it is allowed to have a diff. IP everytime or something like that...
i think it stands for dynamic host configuration protocol
(I won't lie, i had to look that up on google )

Now I need some help. I figured I would bttt this thread instead of making a new one..

my friend has a d-link wireless router that both the desktop and laptop were connected to. I set it up last week and it worked great.

He did something and now neither will connect to the internet.
The computer hangs at "acquiring network address" and then says limited or no connectivity.
When you try to open a browser window it says, "detecting proxy" or says nothing at all, then says page cannot be displayed.
i tried resetting the router and rebooting everything...i can't get either the laptop or desktop to connect to the internet. any suggestions?

yes.. i put a paperclip in it and reset it. i know it reset b/c it was previously a "secure network with WEP and all that...
after i reset it, the computer detected it as a "default unsecure network".. then when it tries to connect to it, it lags on "acquiring network address" and then after about a minute says, "limited or no connectivity, blablabla"

I have never tried plugging the cord into the computer to see if it worked...but last week Everything worked fine when I set it up for him. He was gone at the time and he came home and unplugged something or was messing around with something (or so he said) and now it doesn't work. on the laptop or desktop. he had a perfect wireless signal and internet on both the desktop and laptop last week..now, nothing

Oh, I did do that. It constantly tries to connect to the wireless connection though, and of course says, "no wireless network found".
i opened network connections and there are 2, i'm assuming 1 for direct connection and 1 for wireless.
the one for direct connection won't enable, but it didn't last week either when i originally hooked up his wireless.. so that shouldn't make a difference

1) Disable the wireless adapter in the control panel of the PC.
2) Hook up the cable directly to your cable modem
3) Unplug your cable modem for 30 secs and plug it back in
4) Enable the LAN connection in the control panel of the PC.
5a) If it acquires an IP, then your problem is isolated to the router.
5b) If It doesn't, then your problem is with the PC network adapter and settings.

so now which result is it?

How exactly do i disable the wireless adapter in control panel?
So i disable the wireless adapter, plug the modem directly into the computer, and then let the modem restart after 30 second..then turn on the computer?

i'm confused what wireless adapter icon it is speaking of.. is this in network connections in control panel? or down in the bottom right corner..?
I never understood why he couldn't direct connect his desktop and then let his laptop be the only one on wireless.
