Everyone has their opinion between Canon and Nikon, but I went to a journalism seminar at UNC this spring, and the N&O's photo editor said the News & Observer is moving away from Nikon in favor of Canon, because the former had given them problems in the past.

Having said that, I'd jump all over a good Nikon OR Canon. I bought a higher end point-and-shoot a while back, and while I love it, I'd really like to have a nice digital SLR.

I am buying a Canon 350D here shortly, and I chose it over the D70 (its main competitor) for many many reasons. PM me if you'd like to know why. I've been looking to a 1k DSLR for a long time, and have done a good bit of research and such about the two cameras.

^^ yeah, i have shitty nikon lenses for a 35mm. probably will ebay them with the old camera.

^ indeed, just was looking at this review: http://www.digitalreview.ca/cams/NikonD70vsRebelXT_pg3.shtml

those 2 seem to be the BMOC right now. The reviewers did seem to say that "the Nikon D70 provides the richer feature and function set of the two cameras" and they also said the nikon lens was better.

Don't know if the 2 extra MP of the canon attracts me or not. I don't anticipate ever making large print outs.

the nikon will have better lenses

does canon still use a crappy plastic ring for mounting the lenses or did they finally use metal?

I have a Nikon 8800, not an SLR but still pretty damned nice. Especially the stabilization feature.

Nikon D50 is pretty good... D70 is pretty much no different other than some minor stuff.

canon digltal rebel and the digltal rebel XT are also awesome cameras. there is a noticable difference i think between the rebel and the XT but it depends on what you are using it for. i personally like the nikon d50 for the usability of it but then again some people say the same thing toward canon. i play with all of them about 5 times a week when i am working. pentax ist, not really worth it in my opinion. the minolta slr around that level has a built in anti shake.

Do you plan on doing a lot of, for lack of a better word, advanced photography? You might just be better off getting a nice compact.

I just got the Canon 20d. Its baddass. $1330 for the 18-55mm kit. You'll definately have to get 2 more lenses and some decent filters.

If you dont want to go in that direction, the Rebel XT isnt bad. I think it uses the same lenses and you can get a piece of firmware called the Undutchables that will, dont quote me, bump it up to 8.2MP.

firmware can't add pixels to a camera, it unlocks some functions that the 10d has.

i say D70s because I haven't seen much of a price difference between that and a D70 lately. I have the D70 and it is a great camera, but a slightly larger LCD would be nice.

I have a 35 mm Canon, but I LOVE my Nikon D-70. that thing kicks serious ass. I'd go with the Nikon

I've used a Nikon D100 a bit...no complaints here but I'm not sure how expensive it is (and too lazy to look it up online right now)

^^^^ You're right. However, I never bothered to look into the Undutchables thing myself so thats what some guy told me. It does however unlock some "dormant" functions that a 10d provides... or something to that extent. I'm not the expert on the Digital Rebel so dont quote me on it.

i went the nikon way and got a d70. this was 6 months ago. the kit lens for canon is just crap. the d70 kit is decent. plus i cant afford the 70-200 2.8 Canon Lens which i wanted. I got the 80-200 equivalent for nikon for 350 used. It's an older version but optics is spectacular.

Go to Bestbuy and handle the cameras. Ergonomics was also a big factor for me. The canon didn't feel right especially with its plasticky/toyish build.

Consider lenses when buying.

i think d70 is the best bargain right now...with the new firmware update it is just like the d70s but cheaper.

Get the Rebel XT.

I use the Canon 10D....I wouldn't use anything other than a Canon.
