I miss the old-school platform games (i.e., the Mario series, DKC, Crash Bandicoot). Are there any good ones out there for PS2 or Gamecube?I just beat Ape Escape 2 tonight, and I have Super Mario Sunshine. Also have Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex on the PS2, which blows.

Ratchet and Clank dude. Any of them. Very good series. Sly Cooper is entertaining as well.

I loved Super Mario Sunshine. Avoid Luigi's Mansion. It's boring/annoying in comparison, and I hated the controls. Have you played Metroid Prime/Metroid Prime 2? What about the Zelda games for Game Cube?

Yeah, I have MP, Wind Waker, and the Zelda Collector's Edition for GC. Those aren't quite what I'm asking about here, although I realize the lines have blurred somewhat these days. And yeah, SMS is pretty tight. It's no Mario 64, but it's fun.

What's the latest on Super Mario 128? Is this still on the hush hush, or has Nintendo canked it altogether? There's also the Mega Man Anniversary Collection on PS2/Gamecube, featuring all eight Mega Man games and two arcade games never released here in the US.

GBA Advance has some good (2d) platform gamescheck out the entire castlevania series, starting with circle of the moon (though i think it's probably the hardest)

Sonic Gems Collection comes out in August and features the Sonic CD, considered by many to be the best Sonic game.

Any opinions on Psychonauts?

suxdon't waste your money

^^I'd have to say the Sonic 3/Sonic and Knuckles conjunction was the best. No Super Sonic in CD...
8/11/2005 2:39:14 PM
Meh, Super Sonic, while cool (for the time), added little gameplay-wise. Sonic 3 & Knuckles is definitely second place.
8/11/2005 3:07:31 PM
^^^Any particular reason? The reviews I've read have all been excellent, and I'm a huge fan of Tim Schafer's games. And yeah, I noticed the Gems collection when I was browsing through some sites today. I've got the Sonic Mega Collection for GC and it's a lot of fun, so I may end up picking that one up.I'm also thinking about grabbing one or both of the Sly Cooper games.[Edited on August 11, 2005 at 3:08 PM. Well, I ended up picking up Psychonauts (as well as Paper Mario, which I haven't had a chance to play yet tonight).I'm pretty impressed--very nice graphical style, and the kind of well-written dialogue that I expect from Schafer. Definitely not a traditional platformer, although the gameplay borrows a lot of those elements. My only real complaint at this point are the controls. It's very hard to stay locked onto a target--I think I've been spoiled by the combat systems in the last few Zelda games and Metroid Prime.

Get a Super Metroid and any of the Castlevania ROMs. Aria of Sorrow and as stated previously, Circle of the Moon were EXCELLENT games. If you need any help finding some, send me a PM.[Edited on August 12, 2005 at 2:36 AM. Reason : ]

bttt to give Psychonauts some props. I'm about halfway through it now, and it's freakin' awesome. My initial complaint about targeting turned out to be unfounded--I'm having no problems staying locked on now.

Paper Mario is an RPG, not a platformer.

Super Mario Sunshine's pretty good, but looking for all the blue coins is an uber bitch. I had to read a walkthrough to find all of them. The controls are pretty good, and there's plenty of neat puzzles and challenges, but you'd better be really damn good at jumping and moving, especially in those special levels. Unless you're really really hardcore Mario, don't expect to get much replayability out of this game.Somebody said avoid Luigi's Mansion, and I'd have to say I'd disagree. It's not too bad, but yeah the controls are a little meh. And, for me anyway, sometimes the game can get frustratingly hard. All in all, worth playing at least once or twice through.I own both of these games, and they're nice, but in retrospect I probably shouldn't have bought them, and instead should have just rented them. But they can be fun, nevertheless. You mentioned, however, that you were into the older platforms. I was playing some Goldeneye for the N64 just a while ago, playing it again for old time's sake. I played through all the levels on hard mode and, except for the invisibility and invincibility cheats (the hardest ones to get), I've regathered all of the cheats. It's amazing; I probably first started playing this game about 5 or 6 years ago and it took me forever just to even beat the game (minus the aztec and egyptian special levels), now I've played through the whole thing and gotten almost all the cheats and it hasn't even taken me more than half a day's time total. But anyway, maybe we can set up a wolf-web event where people can play Goldeneye multiplayer (or even better yet, Perfect Dark multiplayer, since I also have a copy of Perfect Dark).

If you haven't played Prince of Persia:SOT yet, you should get it. Its probably about $10 now.

hahahaThe amount of people here that can't tell the difference between action games and platform games is hilarious.
8/14/2005 12:12:32 PM
The 3 ratchet & clank games (PS2) are definitely worth buying. I think the first 2 (maybe the 3rd one too) are greatest hits so you can find them for cheap.
