Ok I need a MPEG-2 codec. I installed the K-Lite pack which ruined all of my mpeg-2 codecs, and now I need to reinstall them. The one I downloaded (Stinky's) lets me see video but no sound - there is either no sound at all, or the sound is EXTREMELY slow and distorted.

Ok this is extremely weird; it plays ok in media player classic, but not in the latest media playerAnd how come on these, I can play it fine, but I cannot use tmpgenc to edit it? It says illegal mpeg stream or something stupid like that[Edited on August 9, 2005 at 5:07 AM. Reason : add]

codecs have 2 associated licenses. a licente to encode and a license to decode. if you can't edit the files, its probably due to the codec not being properly registered

i posted this in another codec thread, but it applies here as well.for the love of god. STOP INSTALLING CODEC PACKS.If you cannot play a file, take the following steps:1. Download gspot codec info and use it to load and render the file. This will tell you what codec you need.2. Google the codec. DO NOT INSTALL IT FROM A PACK. PACKS ARE BAD. Make sure you're downloading the codec from an up to date source in order to insure maximum compatibility.3. Download and install the codec.4. Play the file.Do not install codec packs becuase they generally install a bunch of extra codecs you wont need that will cluter your system. They also tend to install multiple codecs for the same file format. For example you DO NOT NEED Divx Xvid and 3vix. They all play the same files. Just get divx. Also, here are the most common codecs that will play most everything.Divx http://www.divx.com/divx get the basic playback bundle. When you install this, uncheck installing divx player. You dont need it. There is also the option to install google toolbar. If you want google toolbar i guess you could install it, but I dont like extra crap toolbars.AC3 Direct Show Filter http://ac3filter.sourceforge.net/ This is an audio codec for playing AC3 encoded audio. This is very commonly used in files that are encoded with the divx video codec. This direct show filter allows AC3 playback through any media player on your system.Ogg DS http://tobias.everwicked.com/oggds.htm An Ogg Vorbis direct show filter. Another audio codec. This one isn't too commonly used in video files, but it does allow you to play .ogg audio files in Windows Media player and any other media player.Core AAC http://coreaac.corecodec.org/ An AAC direct show filter. Allows playback of .aac and .m4a audio files. All the above links point to the official website of each codec. This insures you are downloading the most up to date version of the codec. There really aren't any other codecs that you should need, aside from a DVD decoder such as PowerDVD or WinDVD. The codecs listed above should play everything in Windows Media Player or any other media player installed on your system. If i've missed anything i'll add it to the list.
