The 6800 is $290, the 6600 is $145. I really want to get a good card that is gonna last awhile and handly the best games. The 6800gt looks like it would be that card, but everyone keeps raving about the 6600gt. Which one should I go with? They both have excellent reviews on Newegg.oops, should be 6600gt in the title.[Edited on August 8, 2005 at 5:56 PM. Reason : .]

6600gt or try your luck at softmodding a 6800 into a 6800gt[Edited on August 8, 2005 at 5:58 PM. Reason : or an x800 pro]
8/8/2005 5:58:17 PM
Whats wrong with the 6800gt?
8/8/2005 6:01:55 PM
the performance to cost ratio
8/8/2005 6:04:10 PM
How much better performance wise is the 6800gt. The cost really isnt an issue, I just want to get a good top notch card.
8/8/2005 6:14:41 PM
then go with SLI 7800s ok

My 6800GT stomps the shit out of my friends plain 6800. He's even got the faster machine.

I am pretty sure the OEM version of 6800 cannot be modded.

i might be wrong
8/9/2005 12:22:59 AM
Just ordered the 6800gt off of Newegg. I cant wait to get it and start playing some FarCry and Half Life 2
8/9/2005 1:43:30 PM
^ BF2 will push it to the extreme, those games wont
8/9/2005 1:46:31 PM
Yeah, it seems to run BF2 well based on the reviews off it on Newegg. I just watched the trailer for that game and it looks insane.
8/9/2005 1:48:33 PM
I dont have any issues in BF2 or HL2 on maxed settings with my MSI6600gt.Farcry gave me a shit-fit though before i updated the drivers. The gamma was always way off, and some textures wouldn't load at all.
8/9/2005 2:01:55 PM
^ do you have vsync on?I run HL2 at 1280 x 1024 at 75 frames with vsync on.ATI x800XL.If you don't want tearing, then you'll need a real good card so you can turn vsync on. I doubt you can do that with a 6600GT. It doesn't bother some ppl, but it bothers me when there's a tear as I turn.
8/9/2005 2:56:30 PM
I run everything with vsync or I get motion sickness, except the original cs
8/9/2005 2:58:29 PM
I would say to get a 6800 Baseline which is what I did. A 6600GT is 128bit with 8 pipelines. The 6800 is 256bit with 12 pipelines (16 possible with softmod). The 6800 outperforms the 6600GT by a mile and it is a good middle ground between the 6800GT and the 6600GT.
8/9/2005 5:46:19 PM
i just ordered the evga 6600gt for $169 - $30 rebate last night from tiger directi dont really care about graphics or enhancing my computer but i had to get one so i can play new games it will be a great improvement from my intel chipset garbage[Edited on August 9, 2005 at 5:50 PM. Reason : js]

6600GT 128mb is hot.500 core, 1000 memory, GDDR3, for 150 bucksvery nice
8/9/2005 11:52:43 PM
8/10/2005 12:25:52 AM
Homeskillet I am, here I'll show you.Id say its faster by a good bit. I guess Id have to define a mile. For 256bit and 4 more stock pipelines it is a better deal and a middle ground. Just like I said.BTW its the GeForce 6800 Non GT I am talking about, just to clear it up.[Edited on August 10, 2005 at 12:57 AM. Reason : .]
8/10/2005 12:53:45 AM
that's about the only game were the extra pipelines are faster.http://www.tcmagazine.info/articles.php?action=show&id=121&perpage=1&pagenum=4and the 6800 has double the ram.
8/10/2005 1:21:54 AM
Ooo really???and smoothcrim that was for Dual 6600GTs not singles, read your own review before you post it. And everyone knows for some reason in Dual setups the GT's run better because of the clock speeds. But this topic is on a single 6600GT vs a 6800 not duals.[Edited on August 10, 2005 at 10:53 AM. lets get it straightvanilla 6800 with 256mb.. like I said (I didn't say all 6800's came with 256mb)difference ~ 0 in most cases but 6600gt still wins6600GT wins due to higher clock and memory speedstoss up depending on what level of detail you prefer to play withsameNo where here do I see the 6800 blowing anything out of the water.since I'm apparently not qualified to assess which is better

Here is my question why are 2 benchmarks so different? Mine is off of http://www.xbitlabs.com a very high performance gaming site who tests a shit load of hardware.

For anyone that wants to softmod your 6800 Vanilla into a GT here is howhttp://www.ocia.net/articles/6800/6800.shtmlsmoothcrim the only thing I have noticed about yours and mine is that my review are AGP not PCI-E and the 6800 is 128mb not 256mb. MacGyver didnt specify PCI-E so I figured he wanted AGP. All your reviews are PCI-E with a card that I havent seen (havent seen the 256mb version) and it seems that card runs slower than my $189.00 128mb card. All of my benchmarks are for an AGP 128mb GeForce 6800 and an AGP 128mb GeForce 6600GT.
8/10/2005 5:46:01 PM
smoothcrim you fucking idiot his post is about a 6800GT I suggested a Vanilla for a middle ground between the 6600GT and the 6800GT. Please REEEEAAAD before posting stupid shit.
8/10/2005 5:47:30 PM
And I will show you from one of the most well known Hardware Review sites. Toms Hardware Guide.First close one but who plays the Sims 2 with a 6800? hahaThats enough for me. Dont try and tell me Toms Hardware is wrong that site is the shit and has been around foreveeeeer. More people read there for reviews than any other site. So for 30.00 I will take my 6800. Looks like THG is blocking pictures here is the link to the benchmarks if you want to see who is right. http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20041119/geforce-6600gt-agp-04.html[Edited on August 10, 2005 at 5:52 PM. I just got my card in, sweet as hell. But FarCry is still kinda choppy, I am assuming its because I only have 256mb RAM right now. I keep getting virtual memory warnings. I am assuming this is the problem?
8/11/2005 6:45:11 PM
256MB Ram is bad, what kind of RAM do you have PC3200? Corsair sales some good stuff even the value line by them is good stuff. Here is a link to the Corsair PC3200 sticks of Value Linehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145026

Whatever the crappy shit is that came with my Dell 2400 2 years ago. I am sure its fucking terrible.I have since ripped it apart, the only things from it in my custom comp I built are the CPU 2.4 P4, my hard drive, and CDRW, and that RAM.[Edited on August 11, 2005 at 7:06 PM. Reason : .]
8/11/2005 7:05:15 PM
Your computer has PC2700 in it so you need to get that speed if you upgrade. Im pretty sure that is the mobo max because that is what Dell installed. Here is a link to your sys specs.http://hardware.gamespot.com/Dell-Dimension-2400-3132-S-1-2I recommend Corsair, but im sure some people will try to argue.
8/11/2005 7:11:07 PM
I upgraded the Motherboard too. I know have a DFI LanParty 865pe. What would be good RAM to get for that?
8/11/2005 7:19:37 PM
Alright your mobo supports up to 4gb of PC3200 184pin. How much money are you wanting to spend? Here are some good options."Supports dual channel (128-bit wide) memory interface- Each channel supports 2 DIMM sockets Supports up to 4GB system memory Synchronous operation with processor system bus- PC2100/PC2700/PC3200 (DDR266/DDR333/DDR400) with 800MHz FSB CPU. DDR333 will run at 320MHz memory frequency when used with 800MHz FSB CPU.- Use PC2100/PC2700 (DDR266/DDR333) with 533MHz FSB CPU- Use PC2100 (DDR266) with 400MHz FSB CPU Supports non-ECC (x64) DIMM using 128Mb, 256Mb or 512Mb Supports unbuffered DIMMs"Info on your mobohttp://www.3dvelocity.com/reviews/dfilanparty865pe/dfilanparty865pe.htmLow Range: 1gb Corsair Value Select $87.55http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145440Middle Range: 1gb Corsair XMS Dual Channel Kit $126.00http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145450High Range: 1gb Corsair XMS (Low Lat.) $291.00http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145476Here is a RAM Guide for info on RAMhttp://www6.tomshardware.com/motherboard/19981024/Good luck, I recommend running atleast 1gb of RAM, My sys has 1.5gig
8/11/2005 8:03:32 PM
Wow, thanks for all the info man! How much of a difference is there between the low and mid value RAM? [Edited on August 11, 2005 at 8:55 PM. Reason : .]
8/11/2005 8:54:53 PM
That is one thing I can not answer and I dont want to throw out my opinions with no facts. But here is what I know for a fact. I run that Corsair Value RAM (1.5gig PC3200) and I run Doom 3 at Med-High settings at 60fps constant 1024x768. Just read up on THG I gave you and maybe someone will reply here with more detailed info on Low Latency or info on how dual channel works, I dont know because I have never had either setup.Good luck.[Edited on August 11, 2005 at 9:07 PM.
