I'm starting to get into this game. I could never get into D&D because fantasy games where you pretend to be "in character" are just too much for me. But as someone who did magic in middle school and warcraft in highschool, and enjoyed lord of the rings movies in college, this kinda game seems right up my ally.http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mix/galleryI've only got a few, I don't wanna get to heavily into it if there isn't any base of players. Anyone else given these a try, if so what did you think?

i wanna get em just cuz im a dork for fantasy like this and i would love just having the figures. do they come painted? id like to get some to paint myself
8/2/2005 3:58:09 PM
are the figures large enough for an adult to make out with?
8/2/2005 4:05:25 PM
These are plastic figures that are pre painted (although I have heard of people repaiting them more to their liking). Each figure here also comes with a card with infomation on the specific creature.I think there are other types of none painted figures for other D&D type games if you wanted a few to do yourself. I'd imagine you could either paint one of those and just use a card from the D&D miniatures game with it, or just repaint a D&D minature to your on liking and use it in the game. They are a pretty good quality painting imo already though, and they are plastic so they are affordable to collect on a large enough scale for a collectables game.

not large enough to make out with, but small enough to put down my pants.excellent.

This reminds me of warhammer, which reminds me of wasted years and money in junior high.
8/2/2005 4:20:04 PM
which reminds you of the fun times you USE to have before you became older and more cynical

I still have a small collection (maybe a dozen or so) of lead Ral Partha miniatures I painted, well, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away (mixed metaphor). Never bought any monster figures; I used chess pieces for small number of opponents or pennies with numbers written on them to keep track of larger number of kobolds or orcs. I found it fun to paint them and miniatures are very useful to a DM or player when adjudicating a melee action. With the minatures to the same scale as graph paper (e.g. 1" = 5'), areas of effect; range; etc., were all simplified. Where's that players handbook?

I'll keep an eye on this thread to figure out who not to hang out with

I made a post over here to help see how big the base of players was. And im pretty sure they are repaintable.http://www.partyheels.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=196111&page=1[Edited on August 2, 2005 at 4:57 PM. Reason : .]

Well I certainly wouldn't be playing a game in hope of gaining social skills or consider this as a substitute for normal social interaction. I consider this more of a way to relax and have fun that is sorta like a combination of monopoly (game) and collectables (hobbies) in an area im interested in with lord of the rings type stuff. But as someone with over a thousand post on an internet message board, many of which are arguing with people on the internet (in the soap box), I don't really have a hope of escaping people giving me grief and calling me a dork.

we have the cheap starter pack miniatures

^who is "we"?

I'm not trying to blast you or what you like, I just think it was a waste of money for me. I still have some of those stupid little pieces I wasn't able to sell.

i don't usually resell books once i've read them, or old board games, or computer software ect... i don't consider it wasted money if i can't resell it, i only consider it wasted if its something i didn't enjoy while using. D&D isn't something I could enjoy. I have trouble pretending to be in character and talking on the behalf of a fantasy being. But this game which has the fun stuff of video games and collectables combined is pretty tight.but what actually sold me on this game was interest in minotaurs since this game offers a variety of them, cause ive been into greek mythology ever since i was studying ancient philosophy for my major, which overlaps into this nicely.[Edited on August 2, 2005 at 6:49 PM. I never new of miniature games until recently, but this one seems to be pretty good and more importantly affordable. (which is something ive heard as a criticism of the warhammer game)

good to know. i played electronic games when i was 8, but the ones i play now are a little more complex, but i doubt i'll ever stop playing games.[Edited on August 3, 2005 at 10:49 AM. Reason : .]

i'd play w/ these if i had lighter fluid and a match, other than that i can't see myself playing with action figures anymore.

I'm pretty sure my brother snagged my dad's original D&D miniatures when he went off to college, but these things have been around forever in one form or another. Painting the figures is half the fun, and the work some people do on them is simply amazing. Miniatures aren't required for D&D however, they're typically just used for collecting and occasionally used for spacing references on the maps (like Gazoo was saying for knobold groups and whatever). When I played, ever so long ago, we used to use those glass marble type things that have been flattened on one side (I can't remember what they're called), but that's only if we were using maps. Most of the time it was just sheets of paper, a couple books, dice, and a healthy imagination. I never thought of myself as 'in character' when I played though, it was always me playing as someone else, if that makes any sense. Just because you're not using a model doesn't mean that you have to 'become' the character, you just have to think about what someone in their position would do and go with that.
8/3/2005 1:44:23 PM
regular d&d does not require d&d miniatures. but d&d miniatures are optional for regular d&d, and required for the d&d miniatures game. i have used my minotaur in a homegame of d&d which is the only d&d campaign i've ever done. i enjoy the miniatures game itself more cause i find it to be more video game/card game like.
8/3/2005 4:43:08 PM
it's really easy to use just about anything for positioninghaving a grid is far more important an a mini, and even that isn't needed
8/3/2005 4:50:16 PM
well i suppose you could use pennies instead of miniatures in reg d&d or in the miniatures game, but you can have lots of dynamics on video games and card games without have quality graphics or pictures. but if you are into the game chances are you are interested in having better graphics, and if you in to collectables then you would definitely want em.

close, nah I played the original warhammer

its my understanding the d&d the game came first and has the most classic fantasy creatures around short of tolkien. but its only recently that they've made an entire game out of their d&d miniatures which draws in people who don't wanna play things "in character." the figures in this come with cards for the miniature game, but has the info so that you can use them in normal d&d too.
