what all have you got to do and how much is it generally?register it?
7/30/2005 7:29:01 PM
not sure on a boat, jetskis u register and its like $20, getting a title from the DMV is optional but required to sell it to someone in certain states (use google)
7/30/2005 7:34:39 PM
do i have to register the trailer too
7/30/2005 7:44:38 PM
NC wildlife registration fees are:$35 for 3 yearsTrailer registration anual fees are: $15/yrthen property taxes..which just started last year about 3% value of the boat..roughlynot too bad..other states are much worse..and some states you need a boat license.sucks, esp. just for lake boats
7/30/2005 7:46:36 PM
3% of the boat im thinking about wouldnt be shit
7/30/2005 7:49:00 PM
The main place for boats and shit is off of S. Saunders St. about a block down from that Dunkin Donuts (where the Dunkan Donuts and Bojangles are on the corner.) THe peolpe there are actually helpful and shit unlike most government bullshit so you can usually just walk in there and they will figure it out pretty quickly. You'll need a registration filled out and notarized by the owner. You have to fill out a new registration form too...I think that is the "VL-1" form and you can get it from their website. Most boats are also titled in addition to the registration, so the owner should have the title as well.

for boating needs in the raleigh area, i would trust no one but jeffrey's and son on lake wheeler.
7/31/2005 5:36:55 AM
When you buy a boat, you're buying a black hole in the water that sucks up money.
7/31/2005 10:30:19 AM
ok thats two old timers who know their shit who have said that exact same thingforget the boat
7/31/2005 11:02:01 AM
7/31/2005 11:02:16 AM
niggers, all of you
7/31/2005 11:23:40 AM

you people make it sound horrible. there's lots of pleasure in owning an aquatic vessel between those two days. joel, you're used to the inevitable tinkering and nickel/diming of a classic car... a well taken care of boat is no worse. 99% of people's downfall with boats is neglect in the off season, thus creating a money pit to bring things back up to par each spring.
7/31/2005 11:36:40 AM
Ivan said it perfectly. I WILL be owning another vessel meself one of these days.

could i tow a 15 footer with a caravan[Edited on July 31, 2005 at 4:16 PM. Reason : or a 4wd yota pickup]
7/31/2005 4:16:11 PM
easily
7/31/2005 4:22:07 PM
Depends on what kinda 15 footer yer talkin' about. If it's a jonboat or a garvey or carolina skiff, no problem.smaller bowriders with stern drive (though it's damn hard to find one that small) might be more of an issue.I have a friend with a 17' Sea Ray with a 140 Merc stern drive...they've hauled it with a Toyota Avalon. Not more than about 30 or 40 miles though.
7/31/2005 4:23:17 PM
stern drive? you mean outboard?
7/31/2005 4:32:45 PM
No. Inboard/Outboard.You got your Detroit iron in the boat driving through an outboard-style lower unit.
7/31/2005 4:34:05 PM
ohno this is a old bassmaster style with a rebuilt 90 horse johnson
7/31/2005 4:39:56 PM
7/31/2005 6:58:33 PM
THE MAN HAS A POINT
7/31/2005 9:12:55 PM
yeah, but obviously has never owned a boat 'cause when the sun goes down and the girls go home, the problems stay. maybe it's cause i have 2 boats. one is always broke.
7/31/2005 10:07:02 PM
im surprised you havent tried to sell me your broken one firsthere is the POS that has me thinking:http://www.horsepowerjunkies.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18734

the elec. trim on my 18' c/c wasn't working last time i ran it so i got to mess with that next time i go to the beach. other than that, both are fine.
8/1/2005 4:32:50 PM
first thing id do if i had that boat would be to rip out the vro and run straight pre mix, vros from around that time were not the most reliable[Edited on August 1, 2005 at 4:46 PM. Reason : .]
8/1/2005 4:46:08 PM
RUN THE BOAT BEFORE YOU BUY IT. BTW, Re-built OB's usually mean a problem down the line.
8/1/2005 5:03:38 PM
c/c?vro?wtf?
8/1/2005 5:25:51 PM
Take the boat for a ride before you buy it. Look how it sits in the water etc. Check out the fuel tanks and have a mechanic look at the motor.
8/1/2005 5:34:13 PM
I'm in the maket for a new boat now since I miss having my old boat since I sold it... my jon boat just aint cuttin it for meI think I'm gonna get a 20'-22'I need a boat that is sea worthyPlus I had no idea you could finance a boat for 15 yearsif you take care of it, it will last quite a while... offseason upkeep is the keymake sure you winterize it and a boat thats stays operational costs a whole lot less to keep running
8/1/2005 6:55:45 PM
and you can write it off as a second home if you spend enough time on itthat means you can write the interest on the loan offat least thats what watching late night tv has taught me
8/1/2005 6:58:20 PM
It needs a head, a stove and berth to qualify as a second home
8/1/2005 7:10:17 PM
vro= variable oil injection...its a 2 stroke.. instead of premixing the oil and gas it has a tank you add oil to and the engine has a pump that pumps the oil into the cylinder...problem is that the oil pump is not the most reliable, so you block it off and run just premix(probably 50 to 1) so you dont have to worry about the oil pump failing and your engine not getting any oil.....this is probably the reason why the engine was rebuilt....
8/1/2005 7:21:15 PM
thats good to know
8/1/2005 7:33:23 PM
c/c = center console
8/1/2005 9:43:08 PM
center consolewtf does that mean.
8/1/2005 10:15:46 PM
It means you got somewhere to stick your registration and yer cigarettes and prop up yer arm on whilst toolin' around the sound looking for topless skank hos ridin' on the back of a Ski Nautique.
8/1/2005 10:27:58 PM
ohlike a car
8/1/2005 10:29:02 PM
Actually, it's also called a walkaround. Because you can walk laps around the boat.Center console is where the helm is...the steering wheel, power quadrant, gauges and shit, and the skipper's seat. This is as opposed to a bass boat or a runabout with offset controls, where everybody usually goes fore and aft along the centerline of the boat.
8/1/2005 10:44:49 PM
oh one of thosei like the boats that look like a cool little car
8/1/2005 10:49:13 PM
I have a 20' deep vee bayliner (1992 model trophy fish & ski) with a 150 horse Mercury outboard. Greg and maybe a couple others here have been on it before. Holds 82 gallons of gas, is very roomy, and is perfectly seaworthy and comfortable as long as its relatively calm out there..For the past few years, its been fine. All I've really done is put oil/gas in it, run it hard, and perform basic maintainence on it. It's been much easier on the wallet than any terrestrial vehicle I've owned...
