I had my external hd networked between my laptop & desktop so I could access it from both.

Then I moved and when I tried it hook it up again the external hd asked for a log in and password that I've never had to provide before.

I've had a few people come look at the problem but no one can figure it out.

I'm a little worried because everything is on there, pictures, music, files, EVERYTHING

Any thoughts?

i think someone had a similar problem a little while back.

it most probably has to do with the security set in the sharing properties - it's set to a username on a particular computer or something like that. if you know what the username and computer name was, you can change the computer name and username to match that and it should work.

or you can use a linux boot CD and get to the data that way because linux won't care about those permissions.

i know nothing ab the user name or settings or anything involved with the set up of it

my ex did it all for me and when i moved it stopped working

that whole linux thing seems a little more complex than i can handle

linux boot is easy.. go grab a suse demo disk if you have a DVD burner.. a bit heavier, but better..

xfld is good, but not really userfriendly to thoes unfamilure with linux.. it mounts disks fine, but it doesnt give you an icon to click.. you have to go look for it, and I think it uses /mnt, some use /vol..

knoppix will let you view the files fine, but I've had issues convincing it to let me write to disk.. if you have a cdburner or better a dvd burner you can get the files off (use K3B), then reformat the drive..

...or better still, can you just put the thing as a slave in your desktop? (it is just a standard hdd in there afterall.. (my Iomega drive uses a hitachi deskstar) unless its one of thoes thin, low power ones.. dont thoes use laptop hdds?)

and if its in your desktop you should beable to acess it over your network from there I would think.. but you lose portability..

i haven't changed any passwords or anything at all but it still wants some log in information

i've had about 6 different people look at it and no one can figure it out

i'll sacrifice my files and music but i will be very upset if i lose all my pictures

this problem is causing some serious problems as a consequence of it not working

i'm willing to pay someone if they can fix it. i'm sure someone out there can fix the damn thing
