Oh yeah, I forgot to put in my opening post that when it comes to severe weather I could care less about the well being of those who can escape it (e.g. I only sympathize for those in 3rd world countries who can't help live where they do and don't have proper warning). I personally find hurricanes and the like VERY exciting and being without power is no big deal. If you don't want your roof blown off then don't build your house on the beach and then bitch when it happens. If you are inland and you get hit by a hurricane then it just wasn't your day.

Usually I'm a fan of severe weather but I just bought a house with a bunch of huge trees around it and the last thing I want is to have to repair the roof a couple of months after moving in.

Heh, I was wondering when you would show up.
When you bought that house did you know that hurricanes exist? Were you aware that hurricanes have a tendancy to make houses fall over? Did you know that hurricanes come from the ocean and move towards the coast? Were the risks of buying beachfront property made clear to you? Did you have the economical means to buy a house in a potentially less volitile area?
If you answered yes to this then how can I feel compassion for you when a natural event wipes out your house?

For those of you joining us from home, my good friend here 30thAnnZ, was the first to say how aweful of a person I was two years ago when I made this same argument about my lack of sympathy for those who chose to live on the coast when they get wiped by a hurricane.

On that note North Carolina is over due for a landfall by a major hurricane, so I say bring it!!

I guarantee I am not alone when I say that I want a hurricane or several to come to North Carolina. I too have family that lives on the near the coast and it would suck if something happened, but I wouldn't call for the alteration of weather if something did.

I think they are neat to study and watch and I like to track them and watch the weather channel, but I don't think thats its super when it destroys peoples' homes, etc. Even though they are naturallllll, you should still sympathize with people and pray that not much damage occurs. If a tornado hit your house, would you say oh well, its natural, or would you be upset about it and want some sympathy???

I too work in weather and I DO pray for them to come. They are exciting. Before this gets out of hand, I don't hope for hurricanes for the sole purpose of destroying peoples' homes/lives. Yeah, that explains all that damage from Hurricane Hugo in my town (west of Charlotte), or all that flooding and and destruction in the mountains from a hurricane in the mountains last year. Yeah, I don't think living on the beach is in my future b/c of hurricanes (and $), but hurricanes, and remnants do cause more damage (and even more deaths many times) inland.

yeah, but they're still exciting.
as kids, storms are great for ALL the reasons. once we're adults and have to shoulder some of the financial consequences and stress afterwards, they're not quite so great.

And what is wrong with that? Would you take that same attitude to storm chasers in the midwest who go after tornados? I am sure they want storms to come near them so that they can scientifically analyize, study and try to understand how the weather works.

totally depends upon the track it takes...and also the winds would create the most damage on the coast, with rain becoming the dominant hazard as it moves inland.

I, as a meteorologist, certainly do not wish hurricanes upon anyone. It's our duty to study these storms and provide the public with information so that they make the decision on where to live, when to leave, etc. It is not my position to call someone out on being stupid for staying along the coast. I personally do not like it, but it is each person's choice to live in a risk area. However, they are very interesting phenomena(sp?) and are absolutely necessary to help balance out heat transfer from the tropics.

We can't prevent these thing from happening, so we pretty much have to sit back and keep our eyes on the ocean activity.

I think tsunamis and red tides are interesting. Doesn't mean I want them to occur off where I live in Miami or off NC. I am currently working on the dynamics in fisheries during ENSO (El Nino) events in the Eastern Pacific. Its fascinating stuff to me, but I hate what happens and inevitable resource devestation for people in the Eastern Pacific.

What annoys me the most about hurricane damage is when MY tax money goes to help people rebuild their homes - who are on beachfront property. They should have to buy $Texas insurance instead of getting government handouts. It's a different story if you're not the one or two closest properties to the water.

Working with the Small Business Administration Disaster assistance this past season, we helped with low interest loans to those affected by the storms. However, there are places that arent covered, such as outer banks, barrier islands. So if a storm hits those areas, they are SOL because the gov will not help rebuild there homes....that is why mostly millionaires own houses there, they can afford the insurance. Also, flood maps, if you are in a flood area(even if once in a 100 year type of event) you cant get help from the SBA..and the SBA helps with homes and businesses. They also dont help with secondary homes, so you are SOL if you bought a nice beach home for the summer. They only cover primary residence, UNLESS you rent it out the months you are not there.

Dr. Xie used to do rainfall modeling with tropical cyclones. Looks like his little chinese speaking lab group has been up to something new. It's hard to keep up with what the non english speaking branch of your department is doing, but I should have been aware anyway . Mea culpa...

HUGE leak at work today

the roof of the finished goods warehouse leaked so bad that the ceiling collapsed and the bldg flooded

it was raining just as hard inside as it was outside

there were even leaks in the big walk-in cooler

some other minor leaks in the main bldg, but nothing compared to the disaster in the FG warehouse
