If they dont fix this slowness soon. Today is about as slow as I've ever seen it. I'm tired of waiting 15 seconds between each page.

its got to be just an anomaly due to: the snow (more people inside)campout/vouchers for the UNC game (more people checking to see whats up)and the TWW fun with the News14 weather banner (lots of pics hosted here have been posted around the internet on other boards and such)give it the weekend to even out
2/27/2004 6:19:03 PM
problem might be too many non-premiesi wonder
2/27/2004 8:04:42 PM
getting rid of the lurkers and the non-premies would destroy the user base which isn't a great idea. i mean i wouldn't want to shell out $texas to post on a message board i've never seen.
2/27/2004 8:44:12 PM
Guess what? Shit happens. The message board got bogged down because people submitted one of our pages to various sites like fark and somethingawful. There is nothing that you can do about it.Block out lurkers? Hell no. They make up part of our population, too.
2/27/2004 9:00:25 PM
Doesn't "anonymous" mean they don't have an account at all???? They don't contribute anything to the discussion, and just suck up bandwidth.Bandwidth that premies contribute $$ too...all 3 of us.

Just for the hell of it, I logged out to see what ads are running and after refreshing a number of times, as far as I can tell there's only 1 ad.Ad Views Today : 29,189 Ad Views This Month : 11,788,816 which translates into $800 for the month.12,000,000 $800 7 cents http://thewolfweb.com/ad.aspxIf my previous idea isn't any good, maybe doing what http://www.somethingawful.com would generate $.If you go to thier forums, http://forums.somethingawful.com/ , they have a big spiel/ad that reads:

This is bullshit.542 users online. 177 authenticated. 365 anonymous. And TWW still lags like a bitch. How much bandwidth is being gobbled by picture linking...now that so many bum lurkers have been here and linking to gallery pix etc.

Yep. And there aren't that many ppl on right now.. 734 users online. 274 authenticated. 460 anonymous. I wonder how much pic linking is going on...[Edited on February 28, 2004 at 1:28 PM. Reason : v]

perhapse require registration after you reach a certain post count. like 4 or 5k. Thats plenty to figure out whats going on on tww and to decide wether or not its worth it. It might also cut down on people who just do non stop padding.also what about archiving all threads past say, page 10 on every board. Do this every night whenver its the least active. It would cut down on what can be searched, and you could offer an archive search functio0n for premies only.[Edited on February 28, 2004 at 1:30 PM. Reason : .]
2/28/2004 1:27:40 PM
disable remote linking to pics would help a lot methinks
2/28/2004 1:37:09 PM
How about requiring a free registration to access the Photo Gallery?[premies and members link too]
2/28/2004 1:39:27 PM
I doubt I'll renew.
2/28/2004 5:20:55 PM
Not to sound like an idiot, but a college message board should be able to sustain more than 500 simultaneous users. At this point its like the moment total number of users exceeds 500, we start seeing crashes and stupid lags. They have taken down almost the entire Chit Chat history, and disabled search. All that remains to be done is to upgrade the server so that it supports more users.
2/28/2004 5:25:15 PM
its due to the remote pic posting id betyou only have yourselves to blame.with the news thing
2/28/2004 7:40:51 PM
^that's why lurkers should be required to set up an account, if they want to access the photo gallery.

dissallowing lurkers wouldnt stop remote hosting.stoping allowing picture linking would.this has been mentioned.btw, most of the memebers were lurkers at one time.if you want this site to die, then not have lurkers.
2/28/2004 7:58:57 PM
Lag will kill this site faster than requiring lurkers to register for a free account to access the photo gallery.I think many members and premies have accounts here so they can link pics remotely. Why should lurkers be allowed the same privileges as those who contribute to the site, eh?[Edited on February 28, 2004 at 8:25 PM. Reason : .]
2/28/2004 8:24:27 PM
This is the first time the lag has really bothered me. I think it's just a temporary thing because of the snow and News 14 shenanigans. Things will probably speed up when the sun comes out and all the normal people are outside.
2/28/2004 9:09:58 PM
Outside? What's that?
2/28/2004 9:15:12 PM
^^so true, number of people online will drop significantly when the weather gets better and more so closer to summer.....that sounds to me like an ideal time to upgrade servers to something that can support thousands of users instead of hundreds
2/28/2004 10:38:39 PM
So, is the server capable of handling only 600 out of the 14,000 registered accounts at a time ?
2/28/2004 10:47:30 PM
the server is fine minus a couple of hiccups here and therethe real bottleneck is bandwidth... an upgrade in that area is major $$$
2/29/2004 12:02:04 AM
dammit the problem was the search got started back up when the server got rebooted... should be fast now
2/29/2004 12:09:34 AM
the problem is that the full text index that the search uses is over 4 GB. it is just too damn demanding for repetitive use. we are going to have to make some decisions...
2/29/2004 12:12:50 AM
yea its faster now.
2/29/2004 12:13:25 AM
it would also help if these morons would quit posting useless posts in these different forums, ex. the garage. we need another mod i tell yah. JJ needs help
2/29/2004 2:00:41 AM
maybe prevent chit chat from being searchable? or just a search by topic type of thing in chit chat, without looking through every single post.

what about limiting search to only search for text in the TITLES of threads, instead of random posts?
2/29/2004 11:38:43 AM
Titles only would be more useful than nothing, but a lot of times thread titles aren't particularly descriptive of the content (things like "omfg!!!" for example).
2/29/2004 7:50:37 PM
OMFG threads rarely go past 2 pages, and aren't memorable enough to want to search.
2/29/2004 7:58:06 PM
well, i'm a user on somthingawful.com, it's a great site, and i think tww could take a hint. it's possible to set up the forums so that people not logged in can only get a certain number of pageviews until they are locked out.btw, if you guys really care, it was kaniff that posted the school/business closings on somthingawful.also, i'm in full agreement that if we were to archive and let premies search past a certain timeperiod, it would definitely help out[Edited on February 29, 2004 at 8:22 PM.
